How to Care for Gold & Diamond Jewelry
5 min read · By the Regal Jewels team
Everyday habits, safe cleaning methods at home, and what to avoid so your gold and diamonds stay brilliant for generations.
Everyday habits that protect jewelry
Put jewelry on last — after lotion, perfume and hairspray — and take it off first. Remove rings before workouts, swimming, cleaning and cooking. Chlorine and household bleach can permanently damage gold alloys, and hard knocks can loosen stone settings.
Cleaning gold at home
Soak gold jewelry in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap for 10–15 minutes, brush gently with a soft toothbrush, rinse and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Avoid toothpaste, baking soda and abrasive cloths, which create fine scratches, especially on high-purity 22K gold.
Caring for diamond jewelry
Diamonds attract oils, which dull their sparkle. Clean them the same gentle way every few weeks, and check prongs occasionally by pushing the stone lightly — if it moves or rattles, stop wearing it and have the setting tightened.
Storage and professional care
Store each piece separately in soft pouches so diamonds do not scratch gold. Have clasps, prongs and chains professionally inspected about once a year. We offer cleaning and repair services at our Chicago store — bring your pieces by any day of the week.
